Kathleen and Andrew Eidelberg

A gift that will improve lives

For more than fifty-seven years, Kathleen Eidelberg has faced the daily burdens of type 1 diabetes (T1D) with positivity, resilience, and the support of her husband, Andrew.

After meeting and marrying Kathleen, Andrew quickly learned about life with T1D. "Kathleen is diligent in managing her T1D, but I saw the challenges it created for her. I wanted to understand how life could be better for her," shares Andrew.

Andrew's focus soon became how they can make life better for Kathleen and the millions of others around the world who face T1D.

"We have had challenges with insurance not covering the insulin she needed. It made me wonder how many other people face the same challenges and what work was being done to change those experiences," shares Andrew.

In 2018, Andrew connected with Breakthrough T1D, then JDRF, with an interest in how he could use their giving to help others facing T1D and what opportunities there were to give efficiently.

"We were going to support Breakthrough T1D because of the organization's proactive approach and focus on research. We decided to pursue a way to give that was best for us," Andrew explains.

Andrew and Kathleen created a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) that allowed them to support both their financial and philanthropic goals.

As the beneficiary of a CRUT, they receive an income stream, attractive tax advantages, and knowledge that their generosity will continue to make life better for all those facing T1D as we drive toward making the condition a thing of the past.

"When we pass away, our giving will continue to help Breakthrough T1D more toward cures," says Andrew

Andrew and Kathleen's gift, and the gifts from many others like them, are a humbling and inspiring example of the many ways Breakthrough T1D supporters move our mission forward. We would be honored to visit with you about ways you can help us do even more to break barriers and improve lives for those facing T1D.
